Info about the IELTS Speaking Exam


This page has a variety of useful resources that will help you to prepare for speaking exam. The exam is divided into three parts which will test different aspects of your speaking ability. 

Test Format  11-14 Minutes

The test will assess your use of spoken English

Part 1 Introduction and Interview (4-5 Mins)

The examiner will ask you a range of questions about familiar topics such as work, home, studies and interests. Before asking these questions the examiner will introduce him/herself and will check your identity.

Part 2 Long Answer (3-4 Mins) 

The examiner will hand you a card which asks you to describe a particular topic. You will be given one minute to prepare and will then be asked to speak for between 1-2 minutes. The examiner will then ask one or two follow up questions. 

Part 3 Discussion (4-5 Mins)

The examiner will ask you more questions about the topic in Part 2. The questions will allow you to discuss abstract ideas and to develop your answers fully.
